It's stunning up in the Sierra Nevada mountains right now. Windchill is severe but it didn't stop these guys enjoying their third day of an Alpine Introduction Course.

Mountain climbers often succumb to altitude sickness — the body's reaction to a significant drop in atmospheric pressure, which means less oxygen is taken in with each breath. Yet, in high altitudes on the Tibetan Plateau, where oxygen levels in the air people breathe are notably lower than lower altitudes, human communities thrive. @ScienceAlert tells us how:

Video of us ascending the glacier at the Ortler (3905m) in Italy. Weather was sub-optimal but doable. Because of static in the air, we do not go fully up to the steel summit cross, but descended very quickly instead. We missed the summit maybe by 10-20 meters.

Spending time in the outdoors?
Align yourself with the new UIAA declaration on hiking, climbing and mountaineering.
The UIAA has released a statement on the use of xenon for high-altitude mountaineering.

Pro tip: one can't read the news from mountain summits. #mountaineering (Sunrise on Mt Hood summit, Oregon.)
...although in the specific case of Mount Hood, I've def called people at the bergschrund below the summit.
Alpine Clubs of Europe
To test out the new custom emojis of logos from alpine clubs (as in the Alps in this case), I thought I could list their websites straight away as well. These are the biggest, list is not complete.

Österreichischer Alpenverein (OeAV)

*NKBV is by far not in the Alps, but let me be a bit biased please.
Stunning morning #mountaineering on the top of Mount Hood. Crusty snow all the way up and consistent ice in all the chutes---perfect. Getting ready to invest in some picks for the vertical ice routes!
This is so cool! The Youth Department of the SAC section Blüemlisalp celebrated its 150 year anniversary with climbing all summits visible from Thun. They picked these 52 summits (and summited 47) based on the 19th century panorama over Thun. Bravo!!
In German but with pictures!

Just came across this ”behind the scenes” video on the construction of the new Schilthorn cable car between Stechelberg and Mürren. Wow. Engineering masterpiece, from planning to putting it together. Good filming as well.

Mountains Starter Pack
As there is no algorithm, whenever people register on the Fediverse, their timeline is empty. With social media this is uncommon and therefore somewhat confusing to newcomers.
@anze3db has created a site , where people can create Starter Packs. These are typically theme-based and gives a head-start at finding content.
Today I have created the "Mountains Starter Pack" with interesting accounts on the topic of mountains, hiking and the like (by no means this should be considered a complete list).
In case you have accounts that are relevant and you would like them on the list, just let me know and I will add them when they fit. In case you are on the list and you would like to be removed, first of all I'm sorry, and secondly of course I will remove you.
Just for your information, only accounts that are set up as "discoverable" can be added.
