I enjoyed exploring the castle's very large Demense. It has several nice walking paths which take you past some of the more modern residences used after the castle was no long the pinnacle of lordly living.

There are formal gardens/parks, as well as areas left as more of a wilderness. There's a nice walk along a river as well as through several area inhabited by at least two species of deer. I lugged my long Nikon lens along, so got some decent shots.

Statement by President Higgins

Weds. 19th Mar, 2025

“The gravity of what is now unfolding in Gaza - the loss of so many lives, including those of women and children – must be recognised and addressed.

The credibility of all those who present as strong advocates for international law and humanitarian action is called into question and indeed strongly compromised by any silence...

All those in positions of influence must break their silence...

While it’s difficult to avoid the asshats* (and “there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism” notwithstanding), given Amazon Ireland has launched this week, just remember that every euro you pay them goes toward fucking billionaire Jeff Bezos who is helping Trump dismantle democracy in the US and elsewhere. So please do your best to shop locally – or with smaller EU shops – and avoid Amazon as much as you can.

* I really need to get the media for my Mastodon server off of AWS. Another bloody hassle I don’t need right now. *smdh*

#Ireland's Climate Change Advisory Council report:

"It warned that Ireland must be much better prepared for the next major weather event, with improved monitoring of climate events and their impacts required to radically improve preparedness for rapidly emerging #ExtremeWeather events."

Smaller industries were also shut down in Canada's #BritishColumbia, #Ireland, #Hungary and #France, while bans will come into effect in #Romania, #Latvia and #Lithuania in 2027 and 2028. The three latter countries are minor producers of #mink. A ban on #MinkFarming has come into effect in #Bulgaria.

An EU-wide ban could be decided on next year, which has the potential to change the industry profoundly once more.

Hope you enjoyed Carrigaphooca, Mashinaglass and Carrigadrohid castles. Tomorrow I'm most likely headed up to Killarney and the Ring of Kerry. There are a bunch of castles and ancient ring forts I'd like to visit and not sure how I'll manage it without a car. There are bus tours, but they generally don't stop at the places I'm most interested in.

Mashanaglass castle is unfortunately in VERY ruinous state and not all all stabilized. It's one of those structures where you genuinely worry about a rock deciding to chose that moment to fall on you.

It might have made its way down the centuries in much better shape, but treasure hunters in1864 decided to blow it up, thinking that it's fleeing owners had left treasure in secret compartments within the walls.
