Legacy crocuses that I planted some 25 years ago are still blooming today. I love the delicate stripes.

Dont "Moss" with colors:
If you concentrate on the simple things, you get something like this. A small cushion of moss in a flower pot photographed in the right light and then the white balance adjusted just a little. And I emphasize: a little bit. The colors come from the background and together they make a very nice combination, I think.

Ein kleines Moospolster in einem Blumentopf im richtigen Licht fotografiert und anschliessend den Weissabgleich ein kleines Bisschen angepasst. Und ich betone: ein kleines Bisschen. Die Farben stammen vom Hintergrund und zusammen ergibt das ganze eine sehr schöne Kombination, wie ich finde.

Man sieht ein Moospolster in einem Blumentopf im Abendlicht fotografiert. Durch die Wahl einer grossen Blende entsteht eine künstlerische Unschärfe; Vorder- und Hintergrund scheinen ineinander zu fliessen. Das Licht im Hintergrund ist farbig: blau, rosa, weiss und das Moos im Vordergrund gelblich, orange, grün. So entsteht ein schöner Farbkontrast.

You can see a cushion of moss in a flower pot photographed in the evening light. The choice of a large aperture creates an artistic blur; the foreground and background seem to flow into each other. The light in the background is colored: blue, pink, white and the moss in the foreground is yellowish, orange, green. This creates a beautiful color contrast.

Passionflowers are so delightfully strange.

Close up of a passionflower blossom. Imagine a flower made of different stacked layers. On the bottom, five sepals, light green in the outside, light purple within. Stacked on top of those are five purple petals about the size and outline of an index finger. On top of that, a circle of fringe, like long false eyelashes, dark purple at the base, a small band of white, lighter purple like the petals for the outer half of length. And the base of the fringe, a finer, shorter fringe of dark purple, like real eyelashes surrounding the base of a stalk that rises from the flower’s center. The stalk splits into five flat green star shaped arms at the end of which the perpendicular pads of the pollen coated anthers attach in a rumpled rectangle. If that’s not enough for one flower, from the center of the stalk, rising beyond the five anther arms are three (why three??) purple spotted pistil tubes with wider lumpy pistil heads bent downward back towards the flower. Complex, extravagant, surprising and lovely. The flowers open and change then fade over the course of two days.

A bumble bee bum sparkling in the sun as it robs nectar from the African Flag flower.

P.S. This flower was in our garden when we moved in, but we need to rip it out each summer because it dries into a fire tender hazard. I would dig out the bulbs but the Anna Hummingbirds love it.
