Oof, my inkjet color printer is out of ink and new cartridges cost more than a BW laser printer.

In the past I've bought off-brand cartridges, but it's hit or miss if they'll work. Anybody have a reliable off-brand recommendation for HP 952/956 cartridges?

@mjausson HP is so evil, I plan to go with something different for the first time in almost 30 years when our HP color laser dies. Unfortunately some other manufacturers seem to do the same nonsense... Hopefully an off-brand set of ink wouldn't be too big of a risk to try out.

@croyle Yes I'm running Fakespot on some Amazon pages rn.

@mjausson Smart! They can be useful if you can find some real reviews you feel are actually genuine. I use them a lot, with great caution. :)

@croyle I got two sets from different brands, so let's hope one of them works. 🤞🏻

Both had free returns, or I wouldn't have bought them.

Seriously thinking about buying a laser printer on Black Friday though. Obviously NOT HP! Although I've heard rumors that Brother is following in their footsteps. 🤔

@mjausson I have too, which is sad as the basic Brother B&W laser seems to have been the overwhelming choice for an HP alternative. :\ I know with our HP which is now almost 10 years old, I have turned off firmware updates since day one, so I think that's helped me avoid more HP nonsense over the years. So non-HP toner still works for me, but with a new printer probably wouldn't.

@mjausson @croyle My people bought me a Canon color laser to replace my HP color laser for Mother's Day last year. It is literally called "The Magic Box" on our network because it was effortless to set up, and it ALWAYS works. It has a flatbed scanner and does duplex without the need for a separate duplex tray or putting the sheets back in the drawer yourself. It's magical, really.

Oh, and it has a smaller footprint than my HP did. I great, big, pink puffy heart it.

@colorfiend @mjausson Sounds good! Duplex works the same on my HP and most printers... Does your Canon accept aftermarket toner without complaint?

@croyle @mjausson My old HP made me turn the page over and reinsert it. 🤷‍♀️

So far, yes, it takes generic toner okay. I have only had to replace the ones it came with, though—so just a single test.

@colorfiend @mjausson Still, that's a very good sign that it worked at all! I'll have to look at Canons then when my HP dies... I've had a Canon inkjet and scanner, and many of their cameras, and they're usually excellent quality.

@colorfiend @croyle Thanks for the recommendation! I'll look at Canon too then.

@mjausson We finally bought an Epson tank filled wonder. It initially cost more than the cartridge puppies, but we’ve saved 3x the cost of cartridges over the past 18 mos. We broke even in 6 mos. Highly recommend.

@mjausson I don’t know if they carry carts for your printer, but I’ve used arthurimaging.com for both inkjet cartridges and laser toner. I’ve been very happy with their much cheaper house brand ink.
