That's it then, hashtag hijackers are starting to push through the Fedigates.

Do report any visibly malicious posts that include many trending hashtags without having anything to do with them.

Do all the marketing you want about anything you want, but don't disrupt caturday, ScreenshotSaturday or other stuff. Label your posts correctly, and use CW when in doubt.

Dobody

P.S. The reason I'm writing this is finding a bikini OF picture in the # screenshot saturday feed.

I don't mind anyone doing that. But there's good reason not to hop on a cool mastodon custom where people share what they're creating on their screens. Or share cats.

There's also a good reason to CW it for anyone who might not be feeling particularly into it.

You wouldn't tag # plumbing on a music post.

Anyway rant over

@dobody i completely understand your frustration. We clearly are not on X or instagram to use the # this way

@dobody quitting the gafams does not mean implementing the same habits we had back there... I agree with you speaking up about this to let new fedi users know abt the masto culture

@zineb_pdf tbh i think most users actually get this one thing at least pretty easily. People who do this kind of hashtag-hopping or algohacking have the same baseline: they're selling you something, and it's not always very good.

@zineb_pdf A while back, maybe 6 years ago (whenever it was I started to post design on insta) choosing the right trending hashtag was primordial to get your stuff out there. (I never did succeed but w/ever)

At least we had the decency to tag the right tags... But this algohacking mindset is what turned IG into the slop factory and pioneer it is today.

Somehow it's even more annoying to see people or bots try it out on an app whose core values are a reaction against this...
