So, in today's rant about and the evil , I just lost more than an hour of editing of a chapter in . I'm sure I've saved the file because it was contained in a zip folder and it won't edit, unless I saved a copy. I didn't want to save it on OneDrive, but on my PC. The result: I went through all the proofreading, edits, comments, saved it again (ctrl+s), closed MS Word, open my email to attach it, and ffs, the file wasn't there

Through a fast search on the web, I'm not the first experiencing troubles with the 'Save As' function of MS Word. In the official forums, the answers are all the same: turn on the Automatic Save. Oh, but there is a little clause for the Automatic Save feature to function: the file needs to be store on OneDrive. Because, of course, everything is for locking you in their ecosystem, buy more storage, be their only user.

Beyond this being an evil design choice - what @pluralistic calls to lock up users that we see again and again and again, OneDrive here wasn't an option: this is a collaborative inter-institutions work and my university account does not allow sharing OneDrive files outside the institutions.
So basically, here is a sad story on when 'a walled garden inside a walled garden encounters design' to enforce their restrictions

and while they're all worried on how to avoid you to escape it, masquerading it with security blabbering, I lost an hour of work that I need to redo, so postponing other tasks, delaying my schedule, and making me so angry that I spent time of ranting about it on Mastodon because all my anger needed to be cooled down somehow.

/end of rant
