Dissent Doe :cupofcoffee:<p>Last Friday I received a letter from a U.K. law firm with an attached injunction. The law firm claimed I must remove two posts about their client. </p><p>That is not going to happen. I am not under the jurisdiction of the U.K. or the High Court of Justice. My lawyer informed them of that yesterday. </p><p>But DataBreaches.net might disappear tomorrow because the U.K. law firm sent the injunction to my domain registrar who, innocently believing them, informed me they will suspend my site if I don't remove the posts within 24 hours. Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"The United States is not Russia by any means, and any comparisons risk going too far. Russia barely had any history with democracy then, while American institutions have endured for nearly 250 years. But for those of us who reported there a quarter century ago, Mr. Trump’s Washington is bringing back memories of Mr. Putin’s Moscow in the early days.</p><p>The news media is being pressured. Lawmakers have been tamed. Career officials deemed disloyal are being fired. Prosecutors named by a president who promised “retribution” are targeting perceived adversaries and dropping cases against allies or others who do his bidding. Billionaire tycoons who once considered themselves masters of the universe are prostrating themselves before him.</p><p>Judges who temporarily block administration decisions that they believe may be illegal are being threatened with impeachment. The uniformed military, which resisted being used as a political instrument in Mr. Trump’s first term, has now been purged of its highest-ranking officers and lawyers. And a president who calls himself “the king,” ostensibly in jest, is teasing that he may try to stay in power beyond the limits of the Constitution."</p><p><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/26/us/politics/trump-putin-russia.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">nytimes.com/2025/02/26/us/poli</span><span class="invisible">tics/trump-putin-russia.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Trump</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Journalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Journalism</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Media" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Media</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/News" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>News</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/PressFreedom" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PressFreedom</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Censorship" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Censorship</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Authoritarianism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Authoritarianism</span></a></p>
Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"The three permanent wires in the White House pool, The Associated Press, Bloomberg News and Reuters, have long worked to ensure that accurate, fair and timely information about the presidency is communicated to a broad audience of all political persuasions, both in the United States and globally. Much of the White House coverage people see in their local news outlets, wherever they are in the world, comes from the wires.</p><p>It is essential in a democracy for the public to have access to news about their government from an independent, free press. We believe that any steps by the government to limit the number of wire services with access to the President threatens that principle. It also harms the spread of reliable information to people, communities, businesses and global financial markets that heavily depend on our reporting."</p><p><a href="https://reutersagency.com/resources/statement-from-the-editors-of-reuters-the-associated-press-and-bloomberg-news" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">reutersagency.com/resources/st</span><span class="invisible">atement-from-the-editors-of-reuters-the-associated-press-and-bloomberg-news</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Trump</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Journalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Journalism</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Media" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Media</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/News" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>News</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/PressFreedom" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PressFreedom</span></a></p>
