Modest proposal for Mastodon newcomers
You came here to leave behind algorithmic feeds, advertisement and annoying overruling billionaires. But, probably, you won't immediately delete all your corporate social media accounts. It's not easy, I get it.
The good news is that being active in different social media could mean experimenting with different social media behaviors. If corporate social media are spammy and attention-grabbing, why not using them only for the spammy and attention-grabbing posts, for the relentless self-promotion that many of us are sort of required to do for work?
Let's leave the eyeball-accumulation mindset to birdsite (that's what we call Twitter here), facebook and instagram. Free from that burden, we can make this a space of authentic exchange, not one where everyone shouts at one another while nobody is listening.
"In the frame of the artistic research *Clearing up the mist*, supported by FrART, Tangible Cloud is organizing two collective work sessions in Brussels. The first one will take place from May 18 to 21, 2022 and the second from June 21 to 24, 2022.
These worksessions will propose an exploratory and interdisciplinary approach, in the form of conferences and practical workshops. From a close reading of the Cloud, we will tinker together vocabularies, speculative devices and prototypes, aiming to propose counter-narratives to Cloud Computing.
Application are open until Sunday, April 30, 2022."

It is based on the RSS feed that any Mastodon account has by design 💛 Enjoy!

A sincere tip for longtime fediverse people who would like their friends to stick around here longer than a week:
If you're on Mastodon or Hometown, you can click the "bell" icon in the profile of someone you follow. This will make it so that every time they post, it will appear in your notifications like an "@". I am enabling this temporarily for friends so that I remember to interact with them. This is important for making this place feel more lively and helps people stick around!
It continues to blow my mind how all the bestest and sharpest tech critics I follow on Twitter won't leave that trash fire, even on the eve of it becoming even more trash. Like if climate scientists had a pet coal fire next to their desk?
Then again I'm right there reading their terrible takes about Mastodon, so I guess why won't I leave
Hi Friends! Thrilled to have just launched the inaugural issue of “the html review” a little literary magazine for poetry and literature meant to exist on the web. you can check it out here-- https://thehtml.review
The content warning handling in the Mastodon app can be read like the tone-deafness of some of the most criticized features of facebook, Google Buzz, etc. that are/were assuming a certain capitalist culture of self-image, sharing, etc.
I would never say that the Mastodon project subscribes to these world-views, it is just that the design processes that created this elegant app are the same that are sure to fail outside of these world-views. And increasingly these design processes seem to be the only ones available.
On a much-smaller scale this also finds its expression in "tap to reveal", in which the lack of Gestalt in the user interface (read as "simplicity", a supposedly desirable quality) mandates the use of loads whitespace and extended text copy. A button labeled "reveal" would have been enough, because the button already communicates that it can be "tapped". It could have been placed closer to the content warning because it would clearly demark the actionable surface, instead of requiring loads of padding, increasing the space the content-warning post takes, and visually suggesting there is something hidden behind. But the culture of experience design demands "call to action", to explicitly tell users what to do and how exciting this engagement will be, with as many verbs as possible.
We are currently rethinking the signup page, and the JoinPeerTube "create an account" page (https://joinpeertube.org/instances) to improve the registering process.
To understand what we can improve, we're looking for some **users** that used your instance signup page. Preferably coming from the "Create account" JoinPeerTube page.
