COVID-19 and the myth of productivity, ppl afraid of being bored when confined at home

What a lot of reactions from people scared of being bored if they stay all day at home inspire me, is that our modern "organised world" taught us that we are not allowed to rest or stay idle just for the sake of it.

A lot of people who work an admin / tech / office job experience guilt, or simply find themselves unable to enjoy a book, a nap, playing with their kids or just do nothing.

It reminds me of my first sick day of burning myself out. I realised that I had no idea how to rest anymore. I did not know how to nap, how to let my thoughts come and go. I would freak out as soon as my brain was minding its own (healthy) business of going round.

Don't forget that our organised world feeds on that feeling of having to be productive or useful, even when we don't have to be.

We were trained to push away "hobbies" as acts that don't make us useful to society. We were convinced that work and employment were the only fields where we could find worth, purpose, growth and delight.

I don't blame you. It took me several months / years to be at peace with doing nothing, enjoying a good knitting session or even to be able to read again without feeling the urge to pick my phone up.

There is SO much to do outside of work. We have access to so much today. We can learn new things, a language, a craft, right from our couch. These can bring us much more happiness and completion than any modern office job.

We can reconnect to the feeling of idleness, of just letting our thoughts come and go and face our feelings without constantly trying to shut them off with constant entertainment.

Now is the time for the most privileged of us who don't have to still go out for health or work reasons to reflect on what we are, on how we think we can be useful to society, how we can reclaim our time and how we can recover a sense of pleasure, growth and empowerment into enjoying things that are not labelled "work".

@mcpaccard I've been gaming a lot. I have to do it on a console, and not on my computer, because I still associate the computer with work, programming, being "productive," and all of that. But I'm glad that I can get lost in games again, it took a while.

@mcpaccard I never experienced this. Work is for subalterns.
