#ICJ ordered #Israel to take a series of measures against potentially genocidal acts against #Palestinians in #Gaza. These include measures not only on the battlefield but also against public incitement to genocide. It also ordered Israel to take ‘immediate & effective measures’ to enable the provision of aid to people in Gaza…orders issued by the ICJ are legally binding, it does not have the power to enforce them. Israel is not expected to commit itself to the orders.”

BBC NewsICJ says Israel must prevent genocide in GazaBut it stops short of ordering Israel to halt the war in Gaza, in a controversial case at The Hague.

Well, there you have it:

1. #ICJ, by not ordering a ceasefire, diminishes itself.

2. #Israel, by not following even the minimum face-saving orders issued by the ICJ will prove without a doubt that it is a rogue state that rejects rule of law.

3. The #US and other “Western democracies” (what a joke), by their complicity, are signing the death certificate of rule of law.

4. #Palestinians will continue to be slaughtered and join the over 26,000 already slain by Israel as the world watches on.

@aral well, the EU has already said it expects Israel to comply immediately.
The Court could have done more, but I think that taking in South Africa's case, declaring that Israel might be committing genocide is a big blow for Israel. It's not a historical victory, but still a win for South Africa and the official acknowledgement that Palestinians as a people exist and the ICJ must protect them.
It's a tiny progress, but still a progress.

@alx I very much look forward to seeing what the EU does when Israel tells it to go fuck itself. And I very much look forward to being proven wrong that it won’t be one huge nothingburger.

@aral sure, I don't have much faith either. But in dark times, tiny lights are to be cheered, because they remind us never to loose hope.

@alx @aral
They're already talking about banning Israel from the Eurovision Song Contest.
I'm sure that will send a strong message...

@duckwhistle @aral I never followed the Eurovision, but on that note, in case people need more context on the matter:
