Ok designers, how do you centralize a hand in a logo, the group of shapes that make up the hand are centralized but hands are naturally weighted off centre. is it the thumb that throws it off?

@RobCubbon im not a graphic designer, but why not splay fingers to get better balance around the middle finger (like your own hand or at least mine when i look at it)? much like the emoji's posture 🖐

@kurufu This is really helpful thank you!

@RobCubbon I love the Saul Bass inspiration here. One thought: take a look at how he treats hands (e.g. "Anatomy of a Murder" or "The Man with the Golden Arm"). They're always off-kilter somehow, /doing/ something.

Your titular Red Right Hand has left a print (otherwise it's a Red Left Hand!). What was the owner doing when they left the print? How does that affect how the hand is contorted?

@noelle Thank you for spotting the Saul bass influence! I shall go and look at those, I shall consider the point you made about the motivation behind the print thank you!

@RobCubbon I am not technically a graphic designer but I'd do it by tilting it slightly away from the thumb, rather than having all the fingers pointed vertical, so that the center of the base of the palm is about the center of the width. That balances it pretty well ime

@InspectorCaracal This is very useful thanks for the help!

@RobCubbon I always hate to point these things out, but assuming those lines on the hand indicate the lines of the palm, that is a left hand...

@ziphi aw yeah well spotted! Well now it works as a right hand print but I'll consider now who the viewer would be and what position they're in in relation to the hand

@RobCubbon This is great. You could try moving the hand to the left a little. The problem area is the negative space above the thumb.

What'd I'd try is to bring the thumb in close to the hand, to make it feel more like one unit. Similar to how there is a strong "block" feel to the text, it would be nice if the hand were stylized to be more of a block. Fun project (makes me think of Nick Cave), good luck.

@stephen this is really good advice thank you I've got lots to work on!

@mastodon.design thanks for the boost!
